I am using a RecyclerView with ListAdapter (which uses AsyncListDiffer to calculate and animate changes when list is replaced).

The problem is that sometimes when I call submit() to update the RecyclerView with new data, it blocks the whole UI thread for 5-10s. This happens after I resume the activity (coming back from home screen), but I am not sure if this is the cause.

I made sure that

  • the submitted list has good, expected data
  • used recyclerView.setHasFixedSize(true); since it takes up all screen space

Comparing two lists is expensive operation. If you're dealing with huge amounts of data it can use a lot of resources. So run your DiffUtils operations in background thread or use AsyncListDiffer which runs on background thread by itself.

Happy to say the "fix" is very easy:

recyclerView.setItemAnimator(null);

I don't care about animations. I just wanted a color flash animation on items that are shown on screen, which I do in onBindViewHolder() and it works very fast without any lag!

if comparitionis string use "equals" if is integer or double use "=="

  • But I already have my custom equals implemented (see in code above), where I compare all the variables which I consider to be content (price and slug - slug is like unique string index). – Primož Kralj Mar 20 at 17:19
  • in my experience in "areItemsTheSame" compare only Id of record in areContentTheSame compre all entity of record – Tomasz Vizaint Mar 20 at 17:23
