I'm trying to cross-compile a simple Rust hello world to it:

What is the content of your main.rs?

Nothing! It's just the default hello world generated by Cargo

EINVAL An ELF executable had more than one PT_INTERP segment (i.e., tried to name more than one interpreter).

Now that's really weird because I also read in the doc: "If the executable is a dynamically linked ELF executable, the interpreter named in the PT_INTERP segment is used to load the needed shared libraries." and I have compiled with musl. It should be static (at least it says it is when I run ldd from the host machine on it).

Try to attach a debugger, either directly via gdb or remotely by using gdbserver.

I understand. I will try to see how to do it remotely as you suggested.

It seems like an error from strace and not from your process.

It makes sense.

What happens when you run it without strace? Is there a core dump?

You are using arm-none-eabi-gcc, which is not targetting any operating system. Check readelf --headers ~/r/gw-test and compare it with a binary that does work, like /bin/cat or something.

The deb file is actually the toolchain provided by the manufacturer. Now I'm using the correct linker and it runs properly on the board.

My first bet are incompatible ABI. Your binary:

0x5000200, Version5 EABI, soft-float ABI

Binaries from your board:

0x5000002, Version5 EABI, <unknown>

Next bet, your binary has many sections missing, so it looks like linker issue. Your QEMU environment isn't identical to that used on your target, but I'd expect your QEMU runs bare metal binary. These cannot run under Linux as would not have direct access to hardware & peripherals.

You need to setup your linker to link ELF compatible with environment on your board. I don't have experience with Freescale but looking at any project that cross compiles for this board should lead you to proper linker invocation.

  • Sorry for the delay! I don't think there is any other project since this board is built by a company for commercial purpose only develcoproducts.com/products/gateways but I do have a rootfs repo with a bunch of C/C++ programs compiled for it on CI and they work. So I guess I should be able to find something there. Or maybe I can simply open a support ticket and ask them directly. – Cecile Apr 14 '19 at 1:22
  • I found a Debian package for the toolchain in the support section of the website (access is restricted). From there I made container to build the app using their linker and the Hello World is now working properly. Thanks a lot for your help and for your time.   • @Cecile Are you user of this development board, or you work for Develco? It's very interesting product, exactly in the niche I'm working for. It would be nice to put hands on the gateway with ability to develop, but it's too expensive for me privately :-) Am I correctly understanding, the docker works without a linker change to .cargo/config? – Michał Fita Apr 15 '19 at 7:59
  • No I work for Charlin in Belgium, we are using IoT to help elders staying at home longer :) we even saved a life once! I'm not too fan of this board as it is all proprietary. I've received today a hub "Orbitel". I haven't check yet but it looks good. I had to change the linker in the .cargo/config (see the PATH in the Dockerfile) but the compiler is musl. I might write an article on blog.cecton.com but I don't usually write technical posts (there are plenty already) but for Rust I will do an exception 🦀❤️ – Cecile Apr 16 '19 at 19:15
