I posted this on the HAL discussion group already, but there hasn't been much response,

we have an ongoing discussion in our developers team, how to POST representations of parent child compositions of e.g. used for order-> orderitems. Assume, that we do not want the order items to be independent resources, but rather nested into the orders. We discussed 3 possibilities so far:

Nested items, not modelled as resource representation:

Our thoughts so far:

Nested items, not modelled as resource representation:

PRO:

  1. Most compact and easy to read.
  2. Most Feasible for the self-documentation engine we use (JsonDoc on Spring).

CON:

  1. We do not know, if this approach would be considered HAL compatible?
  2. Does not reuse generic unwrapping functionality we implemented for "_links" and "_embedded".
  3. Will always force us do have different representations for Order input and order output.

Nested items, modelled as resource representations:

PRO:

  1. Reuses generic unwrapping functionality.
  2. May also be used as output representation in most cases.

CON:

  1. Less compact than approach above. "_links" objects occur in nested objects modelled as representations, is this HAL compatible?.
  2. If used with curies, at which level to put the curie definition? Expected JSON structure can't be derived from automated API documentation tool.

Embedded items:

PRO:

  1. Reuses generic unwrapping functionality.
  2. May also be used as output representation in most cases.
  3. All representation models occur at the same expectable place in "_embedded".

CON:

  1. HAL specification introduces _embedded as strategy for caching that may deliver outdated and incomplete results and NOT as input technique.
  2. Less compact than both approaches above.
  3. Expected JSON structure can't be derived from automated API documentation tool.

Which of the 3 models do you favor, and why?
