I'm scanning characters from an input file and trying to print how many times they occur in an output file.

I've tried creating a new filestream exclusively for the loop since it was used in a previous section of code. I also tried casting long long int to the array and print statement, which only gave me larger numbers.

What is happening here?

    @xing is correct however I would suggest instead of comparing to an array of letters you simply check the ordinal value of the character to see if it's a letter, for example: if (letterTemp > 64 && letterTemp < 91) upperCounter++; else if (letterTemp > 96 && letterTemp < 123) lowerCounter++; See: asciitable.com – Geoffrey Apr 14 at 18:22

Since the original post uses toupper, use tolower islower and isupper to avoid reading the file multiple times and looping to match characters.
