Background

I just wrote this small ActionFilterAttribute (asp.net core v2.2 + c#) that adding Security Headers to the response:

You can put in on the Controller:

[SecurityHeaders]
public class MyController : Controller
{
}

Or on Action. Like this:

public class MyController : Controller
{
    [SecurityHeaders]
    public ActionResult MyAction() 
    {
        // My code here.
    }
}

Until now, everything works fine.

The Problem

If I have the attribute [SecurityHeaders] on both controller level and action level - the Action level should win and be the only one that put headers.

So, if my code looks like this:

[SecurityHeaders(/* DEFAULT PARAMS */)]
public class MyController : Controller
{
    [SecurityHeaders (xFrameOptions: null)] // <---- only this should take place
    public ActionResult MyAction() 
    {
        // My code here.
    }
}

I expecting that the defaults header should be printed into the response, but the X-FRAME-OPTION won't be there.

Acutal, the class level attribute being called with default value of xFrameOptions.

The Question:

How to make Action level attribute stronger then class level?

Then you should probably change your constructor to not have those default values for header parameters and rather make it like

   public SecurityHeadersAttribute(string xFrameOptions)
    {
        this.FrameOptions = xFrameOptions;
    } 

So in your OnResultExecuting() below segment will never get evaluated

    public override void OnResultExecuting(ResultExecutingContext filterContext)
    {
        if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(FrameOptions))
            filterContext.HttpContext.Response.Headers[X_FRMAE_OPTIONS] = FrameOptions;
  • If I will remove the default values from the class level attribute, then I'll have to specify all those parameters on any action (and I have lot of them). This naive solution will work but its not good enough. – No1Lives4Ever Apr 16 at 6:33
