I want to make a nodeMCU IoT project with Pushbullet push service. There are a lot of the same project examples that I'm trying to make.

My project is almost same with a below example.
nodemcu-pushbullet-notification

It seems very simple, but I'm experiencing unexpected difficulties.

HTTPS handshake fail with error 40. Error 40 means got an alert message. Why nodeMCU got alert message from Pushbullet API? Is it the limit of mbed tls library? or am I misused?

May I ask anyone to explain the following logs of tls?

    There is a lot of information but not much clarity in github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-firmware/issues/1707. Are you on a recent NodeMCU version i.e. latest from master? I see that Pushbullet is using SNI for TLS but mbedTLS should support that. – Marcel Stör Apr 18 '19 at 8:37

Pushbullet uses SSL certificates with SNI. A certificate analysis is available at https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=api.pushbullet.com.

As per the NodeMCU TLS documentation SNI is not supported by the Espressif SDK.

The TLS glue provided by Espressif provides no interface to TLS SNI. As such, NodeMCU TLS should not be expected to function with endpoints requiring the use of SNI, which is a growing fraction of the Internet...

  • You can sometimes work around SNI by connecting to the service IP and adding the HTTP Host header. However, with Pushpullet I had no luck. – Marcel Stör Apr 30 '19 at 14:06
