I'm trying to initialize my Vuex store from Firestore. The last line of code context.commit('SET_ACTIVITIES', acts) is what creates the error. I don't think I'm mutating the state directly since I'm using an action. What could I be missing?

Here's my Vuex store:

Also, it gives me the error equal to the number of items in Firestore. Why would it do that if I'm only doing one commit?

  • Do you actually want to use onSnapshot()? That will trigger every time your data changes. I only ask as you're only committing the mutation outside the onSnapshot observer which makes me think you only want to do this once – Phil May 7 '19 at 0:51

    @Phil What you're saying here totally makes sense after reading your response below. Just to be clear, if I create the array and commit within onSnapshot then everything happens sequentially. With my way, the onSnapshot didn't finish before the commit? – tazboy May 7 '19 at 1:09

  • That's it exactly. The onSnapshot observer continues to execute each time your collection changes too so not only is it running after your commit, it will continue to do so. – Phil May 7 '19 at 2:37

You're running into an issue with object references and asynchronous methods.

CollectionReference#onSnapshot() is asynchronous, triggering the snapshot listener / observer on QuerySnapshot events.

Basically what happens in your code is that you assign the empty array acts to state.activities (same object reference) in your mutation and then, at a later time in your snapshot event handler, directly push elements into it.

A quick solution would be to commit the mutation within the onSnapshot observer

    context.commit('SET_ACTIVITIES', acts)

If you only want to do an initial fetch of your collection data, use CollectionReference#get() instead. Given it returns a promise, you can use this to make your action composable

      .map(({ doc }) => ({

  • I had similar problems when changing objects or arrays that were passed to a child component in Vue as prop. Generally when you want to lose the reference of an array you can _.clone() it or use _.cloneDeep() (with lodash) when it contains objects. – Nicolas Durant Nov 29 '20 at 15:35
