I'm creating a iOS app with Swift 4 than tries to get data from a external API using Alamofire, then this data is converted into a JSON with Swifty JSON and presented to the user in a UIViewTable. I want to add a conditional (like if or swift statement) to using differents types of data structures according to the type of data that the API sends.

I have a multiple swift files, one for API Requests, other for Functions, and one for the UITableCell structure declaration.

I want to add a if o switch statement in NotificationsViewController than can get a type of API response. In the createCells function I get what type of notifications is, so I can set the necessary data into the response. This code already get the data and puts it into a 2D array with the custom type NotificationData. The problems is when I want to add a different type of custom cells depending the type of the notification in the 2D array.

I tried to add a if or switch statement into NotificationsViewController to get the type of the notification, e.g. If the type is 3, the type is a Score, so I have to use a prototype cell called ScoreCell using let cell = tableView.dequeueReusableCell(withIdentifier: "ScoreCell") as! ScoreCell but if the type is 1, the type is a Ingress so it have to change to let cell = tableView.dequeueReusableCell(withIdentifier: "IngressCell") as! IngressCell and uses the Ingress prototype cell. When I try to add these conditional in the ViewController, xcode marks an error. In the NotificationsViewController include the tried code as a comment. Can you help me?

Use a protocol with one requirement

protocol NotificationData {

Then use different structs and declare only the members which belong to the struct for example

   let dia: String

In createCells create the different structs depending on the type and assign the type.

It's unclear if you really need a 2D array, the simple solution is to declare an 1D array as the protocol type and sort the array by type

in cellForRow switch on the type, get the item and cast it to the actual static type to have access to the struct members

  • You have to assign values of score to the labels of cell for example in the score cell part cell.sisLabel.text = score.sis

  • Yes, I undestood now. I use cell.agoLabel.text = score.agoLabel to assign. Thank you. The problem now is than the tableView functions are executed before than the API request get a response so the initial var cells = [NotificationData]() gets a 0 at the cell.count :( Commented May 22, 2019 at 18:18

You need to care about cellForRowAt
