I have two data frames,
aa has start and stop time of events - many per day
prbb has the start and stop time of my interest for those events - one start and one stop per day per event.
I would like to extract the many events from aa that fall into the timespan of this day for this event from prbb

I tried this, but it didn't work, it ignores by=

setDT(aa)
setDT(prbb)
aa[inrange(aa$aastart, prbb$prstart, prbb$prstop, incbounds = FALSE) & inrange(aa$aastop, prbb$prstart, prbb$prstop, incbounds = FALSE), by = prbletters]

setDT(aa)
setkey(aa, aastart, aastop)
setDT(prbb)
setkey(prbb, prstart, prstop)
foverlaps(aa, prbb, nomatch = NULL, mult = "first")[ ,  by = prbbletters]

I also tried fuzzy_joins but I can't seem to integrate properly the grouping.

looks like you were close.. just had to add the letters as key before using foverlaps.

from the foverlaps-help:
The last two columns in both by.x and by.y should each correspond to the start and end interval columns in x and y respectively.

So set all keys you want to overlap-join on, and make sure the last two are start and end.

setkey(aa, aaletters, aastart, aastop)     # <-- added aalatters as first key !!
setkey(prbb, prbbletters, prstart, prstop) # <-- added prbbletters as key !!
