Problem incrementing parent version field when saving a child entity and returning back correct version number to DTO.

Here an example of two solutions I've tried:

public class Parent {

    @Id
    @Column(name = "id", updatable = false, nullable = false)
    private UUID id = UUID.randomUUID();

    @Version
    @Column(name = "versie", nullable = false)
    private Integer version;

    @OneToMany(mappedBy = "vorming", fetch = FetchType.LAZY, cascade = CascadeType.ALL, orphanRemoval = true)
    @OptimisticLock(excluded = false) // used to increment parent version if child version has changed
    private List<Child> children = new ArrayList<>();

    // omitted

    public void addChild(Child child) {
        this.children.add(child);
        child.setParent(this);
    }
}

@Entity
public class Child {

    @Id
    @Column(name = "id", updatable = false, nullable = false)
    private UUID id = UUID.randomUUID();

    @Column(name = "some_property", nullable = false)
    private String someProperty

    @Version
    @Column(name = "versie", nullable = false)
    private Integer version;

    @ManyToOne(fetch = FetchType.LAZY, optional = false)
    @JoinColumn(name = "parent_id", nullable = false)
    private Parent parent;

    public Child(String someProperty, Parent parent) {
        this.someProperty = someProperty;
        this.parent = parent;       
    }

    // omitted
}
@Service
@Transactional
public class ChildService1 {

    private final ChildMapper childMapper;
    private final ParentRepository parentRepository;

    public ChildDTO create(ChildDTO childDTO) {
         Parent parent = parentRepository.findById(childDTO.getParentId()).orElseThrow(...);

        // Maybe some validation here

        Child child = childMapper.asChild(childDTO); // maps properties from dto to entity
        parent.addChild(child);

        return childMapper.asChildDTO(child); // child.getVersion() == null, parent#version field is updated
    }

}

The problem here is that the mapper will map null as the version field back to the ChildDTO iso 0.

Possible solution for ChildService1 is making the version field primitive int or initiazing it to 0, but not sure this is a good approach.

public class ChildService2 {

    private final ChildMapper childMapper;
    private final ChildRepository childRepository;

    public ChildDTO create(ChildDTO childDTO) {
         Parent parent = parentRepository.findById(childDTO.getParentId()).orElseThrow(...);

        // Maybe some validation here

        Child child = childRepository.save(childMapper.asChild(childDTO, parent)); // maps properties including set parent
        return childMapper.asChildDTO(child); // child#getVersion() == 1, but parent#version field will not be updated as specified by @OptimisticLock
    }

}

Problem with ChildService2 is that the parent version field will not be incremented as the child is saved.

Looking for a good approach of accomplishing this issue.
