I am setting up a DNS Caching and Forwarding Server and am currently using DNSMasq for this. I am trying to fasten the lookup times to the authoritative server by trying to read a set of headers from a File and send those DNS Headers using the forward.c file of DNSMasq. So the code structure is as follows:

  1. Initial setup of DNSMasq is happening as it is.
  2. The function check_dns_headers is being called in the DNSMasq.c file by the main function.
  3. This in turn calls the receive_query function from the forward.c file where in lies my modified code.
  4. In the original code, receive_query function would listen on the interface for a query, check whether the query has been cached, and based on that, forward to nameserver if necessary. But in the current code, the DNS header is read off the CSV file and created, and the same process of checking with cache is done before forwarding it to nameserver if necessary.

Now, I am facing an issue in that I am creating the DNS Header alone without creating the Question as well as the Qtype for the packet and forwarding it to the Nameserver. This is resulting in a Format Error response with a dnsmasq reply error of -1. This is correct.

What I now want to do is create the question, qtype for the packet to make sure that the packet is going with the correct fields set and thereby get the correct response.

In the case of setting DNS Flags, it was easy because the structure defined in DNS_Protocol.h gave me a good idea of how it needs to be accessed and how to modify.

I understand that modifying the qtype and qname may have to involve something with respect to the daemon->packet field, but I just am not able to figure out what exactly is the variable or where exactly should I modify.

I even have tried dumping a packet in Hex and trying to assign that packet to daemon->packet to see if I can overwrite it forcefully however it just isnt changed.

This is an expected error. But even after hardcoding daemon->packet, this is surprising.

  • You might want to read section 4 of RFC1035 to better understand how DNS messages are formed. Note also that names are "compressed", see section 4.1.4 – Patrick Mevzek Aug 14 at 20:02
