I'm running into a strange segfault issue when I try to use Boost.Multiprecision to wrap MPFR and disable Eigen's alignment assumptions.

When I build this using gcc/clang with a "minimal" set of options, it works fine:

g++ mat_test.cpp -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu -lmpfr -I/usr/include/eigen3 -o mat_test

However, when I try to disable eigen's alignment assumptions, it segfaults during the inverse calculation.

Note that this segfault does not occur if I change the matrices to hold doubles or floats. I noticed that there used to be a bug in Boost Multiprecision's MPFR wrappers where self-assignment would cause strange issues, however I believe I am using a new enough version of Boost that this should be fixed (1.65.1).

Is there something specific about the particular options I'm using for defining my Boost MPFR types that is interacting negatively with Eigen?

I tried using gdb to trace where the problem is happening, but I can't really make much sense of what the actual problem is.

  • This strongly looks like a bug, please report this at eigen.tuxfamily.org/bz. As far as I see it, ei_declare_aligned_stack_constructed_variable (which is required inside the GEMM code) does not take into account that non-standard types may have minimal alignment requirements on their own. Actually, for non-standard types it is likely not very beneficial to use a blocking GEMM instead of a lazyProduct (internally by the solver -- but also in general, of course) – chtz Oct 14 '19 at 12:20
