I wrote a procedure in a x64 assembly (masm) and when the execution of the code reaches the ret statment it gives this error : Exception thrown at 0x00007FF69997AA5C in HW04_Q01.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. occurred

  • but i did not do any push to the stack how can i know what value needed to tbe added to the esp register to clean the stack for each C function call – ahmed alzahrani Nov 6 at 21:28

actually i replaced each call to sqrt() C function with the mnemonic sqrtsd since the values i'm dealing with all stored in SSE registers(xmm0, xmm1, xmm2, ...) and it worked

  • call sqrt clobbers xmm1..5 in the Windows x64 calling convention. Now that you're not making function calls you can keep all your values in registers like a compiler would, instead of inefficient store/reload to named variables all the time. – Peter Cordes Nov 7 at 3:37
