Pyaudio installation error - 'command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1'

Question

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, Python 2.7.1 and wanted to install Pyaudio. So I ran,

$ sudo easy_install pyaudio

in the terminal and the process exited with following error messages,

I wasn't sure whether to post this on askubuntu.com or here in stackoveflow, but anyway here it is in stackoverflow. Also I google'd a bit this question and found by installing python-dev have solved the problem for some. I've already installed python-dev. What may have gone wrong?

At least on my Ubuntu 14.04, this results in a complaint from apt-get about the package being broken. I suspect there is a broken dependency involved as this answer works: stackoverflow.com/a/21801632/865169 (including libjack-jackd2-dev).

I installed first the portaudio in this way and then the pyaudio and it worked Ubuntu 18.04.

Well, I solved the problem by using the package manager,

 $ sudo apt-get install python-pyaudio

Although still has no clue why easy_install fails.

Easiest method of install. Seems PIP and easy_install fail to install C source dependencies.

This generally isn't a recommended solution. In this case, the pyaudio system package and pip package are both up-to-date, but usually the system package is ancient and buggy. Installing the dependent system packages, and then installing with easy_install or pip (as the solutions below explain), usually results in a better installation.

On ubuntu 13.10 aka Saucy Salamander, I solved the problem by installing libjack-jackd2-dev and portaudio19-dev.

sudo apt-get install libjack-jackd2-dev portaudio19-dev

Then pip install pyaudio should work.

I install in my virtualenv. pyaudio (0.2.11)

pip install pyaudio -> error
sudo apt-get install portaudio19-dev -> success
pip install pyaudio -> success

This is how I get it work:

brew update (you can ignore this step if your brew is up to date)
brew install portaudio
brew link --overwrite portaudio
sudo python2.7 -m pip install --global-option='build_ext' --global-option='-I/usr/local/include' --global-option='-L/usr/local/lib' pyaudio

On Fedora 27 in order to get pyaudio from a default python3 installation I did the following

sudo dnf install python3-devel
sudo dnf install portaudio-devel
sudo pip3 install pyaudio

I found this question after experiencing a similar error on OpenSuse (13.2). So I figured I'd post my solution as well, in case other people find this via Google.

Although libportaudio2 is the package containing the libs, you need portaudio-devel as well to make the installation work.
