This is the inverse of this question.

I have a string allocated in a C function (specifically by the cJSON library) that I want to return to an Ada caller as an out parameter, and free the string from Ada.

The C interface looks like this:

The Dump_Record function sets outstr to the value returned by cJSON_Print, which allocates a string via malloc.

How should the Ada binding be specified and how can I retrieve the output string and properly deallocate it in Ada?

    If you want to deallocate (free) an object allocated by cJSON, then you should import and use cJSON's free function cJSON_free. I would strongly advise to not mix allocator/deallocator functions of different software components as they might not share the same storage mechanism. Allocator/deallocator functions always come in pairs and should be used as such. – DeeDee Jan 28 at 19:09

So to implement your function in Ada:

Apparently, the Rec parameter needs to be aliased so the compiler knows it's a reference in C and doesn't re-allocate it somewhere else, i.e. secondary stack.

  • @DeeDee, "erroneous" means it might work - but then again, it might not. Or it might work with this release of the compiler, but not with another. And "work" is a bit undetermined, since we’re playing about (chancing our arm) with the memory arena here. – Simon Wright Jan 28 at 20:17

    It will work with GNAT as GNAT uses malloc/free for new/unchecked_deallocation, which would match up with the C application. If another compiler doesn't use malloc/free then this will likely not work. – Lucretia Jan 28 at 21:06
  • To guarantee it works, you should use procedure Free_Chars (Ptr : chars_ptr) with Import => True, Convention => C, External_Name => "free";. – flyx Jan 29 at 8:40
