I am trying to handle pointers within friend classes in PyBind11. The problem is that I am not able to retrieve the pointed values of a friend class object in Python. The toy example works, but the values are totally different than what they should be.

I thought initially that it would be because of the friend class, but according to my readings and understanding I don't think it is. I also wasn't able to find anything in the documentation.

In Python

b should be 2, and instead, it is a totally different value.

Independently of pybind "magic", the function create_neat() instantiate a local variable

Pet dog = Pet("rufus", 2);

and then pass its address to an Owner instance. This address life span is only create_neat() function scope so nothing good can happen once create_neat() function returns. The dog address will point to anything when create_neat() function returns

  • Indeed, this is surely the reason. So the only way to workaround this issue is to get rid of the pointer in the Owner class ? I'm asking because this has quite an important influence on how my project is structured.

  • If there is only one owner per pet, I would have owner instantiate the pet himself. But this is not related to pybind usage or not.To avoid memory leak issues you should have a look at std::unique_ptr Apr 11 '20 at 9:17
