As it is possible to stop a single step in a Azure DevOps pipeline:

Is it also possible to check a condition and stop the whole pipeline run or job depending on that?

PS. I know, you can set conditions to jobs, but in my case the whole pipeline is a single job and it does not make sense to split it into multiple jobs, because of other reasons.

  • Agree with Krzysztof Madej. This is some additional information. 1. If you use the Rest Api to cancel the build, the pipeline state will be marked as "canceled". 2. Since you don't want to add code, you could add condition to every tasks. In this case, the pipleine will run and be marked as "Success" , but all the tasks will be skipped. You can cancel a build through REST API:

Please note

What you can't do is set a build as completed. If you dod this. Whole pipeline will be still executed. So if this isn't what you want, you need to add condition to every step with an output variable set previously in the pipeline and in that way ignore those steps.

    Thank you for your reply! Hm, I don't think this is a satisfying solution: The pipeline should not be marked as failed if the condition is not met and I don't want to have additional code at each following step.

There is a different way to cancel the pipeline using the python script and the REST API inside the pipeline.

I found a very simple way if you want to cancel the whole yaml pipeline run. You just use a bash task that runs "exit 1" with the property failOnStderr set to true:

  - bash: |
      exit 1
    failOnStderr: true

Then you have two options for conditionally triggering the task. Either using "condition" that for example checks a variable's value:

  - bash: |
      exit 1
    failOnStderr: true
    condition: and(succeeded(), eq(variables['abortPipeline'], true))

The "succeeded()" here is not obligatory, as you cannot cancel a pipeline run that is already canceled. But it's something you'll need in most cases when using conditions so it's better to settle down into a routine using it.

Alternatively, you can use if statement inside the bash script:

      if [ $(abortPipeline) = true ]; then
          exit 1
      fi
    failOnStderr: true

It is also important to note that there are multiple ways to reference a variable in a yaml pipeline and the right way depends on the use case, see this Azure doc.
