I have two features that I wanted to build.

  1. The first feature is for uploading images. It has its own page that contains the image description, timestamp, location, and the image container. Then it will be stored at the firestore databasethe upload image firestore database. This is the code form the upload image feature

  2. The second feature is for creating a self post. This feature will also contain images (if needed) and post description
    create post feature.

So if the user decided to create a post, I wanted to store the data in the same userPosts collection were the upload image data is also stored. Like the Create post and Upload image will be sharing One collection (userPosts). And if only a text was created as a post without putting an image, it will also be stored at the collection. I wanted to know how to build these particular features.

EDIT : After updating the post in the collection especially only the description without an image it will return an error: The following assertion was thrown building Post(dirty, state: _PostState#154ab): 'package:cached_network_image/src/cached_image_widget.dart': Failed assertion: line 163 pos 16: 'imageUrl != null': is not true.

How can i resolve this error when only the description is updated in the database without an image?

You are already doing that with the code you have.

The createPostInFirestore methods in both fragments are already creating documents in the same collection and not using the necessarily all fields, which is something that Firestore supports, so you are good to go.

I would change the following in your firestore structure for a better performance though:

  • You do not need to have the userPosts collection as a subcollection of whatever other collections postsRef is pointing to.

Since you will already be storing the ownerId in the userPosts, you do not need that. You could go with one or the other, but having both seems unnecessary redundancy.

If you choose to have it separate from the parent collection, you could query it by adding a where clause by ownerId in your subsequent fetches, like this example:

For update you can do the following:

You can mount the data map however you see fit based on what the user is trying to save on firestore. You can found more details on this on the Official Firestore Documentation

  • I wanted it to update in one collection. The CreatePost and upload photo will share one collection, but in CreatePost the user might want to post only text(description) and leave photo. How can i update it in the userPosts collection? – PrinceJ Jun 23 '20 at 1:06
  • As I mentioned in the answer, Firestore supports you not using all the properties in a document, so you don't really need to worry about that, you just need to use the update function of the SDK, I will add an example to the answer. – Rafael Lemos Jun 23 '20 at 13:53
