I am in a need to run the few complicated queries frequently on my database, one of my queries is taking around 57 sec to execute, I am trying a way to tune my Postgres database, so, I can cut the execution time to half or more than that.

I have created indexes and adjusted a few parameters on the table, but it didn't help me.

I am using the Postgres version 9.6, and below are the parameters that I have used to tune the database.

  • Your setting of max_connections and work_mem seem rather extreme (high and low respectively). Is there a reason behind those settings? – jjanes Jul 21 at 23:40
  • Yes, my database is connected with 4 applications, that’s the reason I have set the max_connection to 1500 and for work_mem, I already tried by increasing it but no luck, I got the suggestion of this value from pgtune.leopard.in.ua. That I have added to test. – Sujeet Chaurasia Jul 22 at 2:32
  • 1500/4 = 375, that is still very high, maybe your apps are leaking connections, or just need to use a connection pooler. How high of work_mem did you try? Did the plan not change, or did it change but just not get faster? You can set it just locally-to-a-session for testing purposes, so you should be able to set it quite high. – jjanes Jul 22 at 15:52
  • Have you tested upgrading? In particular, the largest sort should be done in parallel in newer versions. Parallel execution was new in 9.6 and pretty primitive. – jjanes Jul 22 at 15:58

It got fixed after updating to postgres10, the suggestion of jjanes worked
