Let's say I have the following C program:

Compiling this on Compiler Explorer gives me:

This is (somewhat) similar to what compiling via gcc gives me, at least for the main part. However, this will not compile as a "stand-alone", for example if I copy-paste the asm into a file gb.s and run $ gcc gb.s I get an error:

From this, I have two questions:

  • Why doesn't the godbolt compiler contain that at the top, or something else to make it self-contained?
  • Is there a way to run gcc and tell it that main is the main/global section without putting .globl main at the top?

    godbolt does contain that too, but you have filtered it out. See the "filter" option. Note that godbolt just runs gcc -S for you and formats the output.

It's removing boilerplate so you can see the interesting parts. How to remove "noise" from GCC/clang assembly output?. If you know asm, you know that functions are in .text, and are global symbols with .type function. And that data is either in .rodata or .data depending on read-only or not. Aug 1, 2020 at 20:33

Godbolt (Compiler Explorer) is not a compiler, but a web interface to study the output of many compilers for many languages. Since it is intended mostly to study optimizations and code generation, its output is filtered by default to show you what is relevant.

I think this is an instance of the XY problem. Assuming that what you want is to see what your local GCC generates, you should use the -S option which will give you the unfiltered output. You can then pass that into GCC again to link it.

In other words, you don't need Compiler Explorer if what you want is to compile actual programs into assembly and then link them.

  • @P__J__ No, OP hasn't said anything about "wanting Compiler Explorer". OP is talking about linking assembly into a runnable program, and why CE's output is not directly linkable.

    @P__J__: Godbolt already passes -S, adding another one in the options box will do nothing. Not filtering directives on Godbolt is an option in the UI dropdown. (Then you can copy/paste buildable asm from some interesting compiler you don't have installed locally, in order to benchmark it for example. So there's a use-case for doing this instead of using gcc -O2 -S locally.) Aug 1, 2020 at 20:32
