I'm using the DrawTextRotatedB function from Josef Švejk's excellent answer to the question How to draw text in a canvas vertical + horizontal with Delphi 10.2 to draw text vertically on a TPanel (full code below, Win 32 program).

This is done in a message handler (message WM_DRAWTEXT). The PostMessage call is in the FormResize (which in the real program does a lot more).

Issue:

FormResize is called from FormShow, all relevant code is executed, but the vertical text does not show.
If I then resize the form, the same code gets executed again and it is visible.

How can this be, and how to fix it?

  • @SertacAkyuz Good question. THackPanel(PnlLeftLeft).Canvas.TextOut(100,100,'TextOut'); in the FormResize also does not show initially. When resizing it flickers 'in and out'. – Jan Doggen Jan 26 at 20:28

    You should only draw in a window when you are handling its WM_PAINT message. Are you doing that? – Andreas Rejbrand Jan 26 at 20:57

    You need to subclass the target Panel's WindowProc to handle WM_PAINT to do the actual drawing on the Panel's Canvas. You can use your WM_DRAWTEXT to Invalidate() the Panel to trigger a repaint. – Remy Lebeau Jan 26 at 21:30
  • @RemyLebeau I found this example of subclassing but TPanel does not have an OnDrawItem like TListBox does. Which method would I need to handle? Or could I use the FOldWindowProc : TWndMethod; FOldWindowProc := Panel.WindowProc; Panel.WindowProc := NewWindowProc; etc code and intercept WM_PAINT (that would be a bit easier) – Jan Doggen Jan 28 at 20:09
