I am looking for a effective/efficient way in VB6 to take a byte array split it into "chunks" and write each "chunk" to a file. The reason behind this is so that as each "chunk" gets written I can call RaiseEvent WriteProgress(BytesDone, BytesTotal) in order to update a progress bar elsewhere. Any suggestions on loop structure etc. is much appreciated.

CopyMemory is a fast way to extract an array chunk;

  • can the same procedure work with strings? would it be any easier(using mid$)? The byte data is originally passed to me as a string and I convert it to a byte array. IMO it shouldn't matter what type it is.

I would make a small InvisibleAtRuntime = True UserControl, name it ChunkWriter. Then add a Timer control named tmrChunk (Enabled = False and Interval = 1) and the following code:

This gets you your progress event without the hazards of DoEvents() calls. It could easily be changed to accept a String and write its data either in Unicode as it comes or after ANSI translation: just a two-line change to WriteChunks().
