I have a Powershell script that scans log files and replaces text when a match is found. The list is currently 500 lines, and I plan to double/triple this. the log files can range from 400KB to 800MB in size. 

Currently, when using the below, a 42MB file takes 29mins, and I'm looking for help if anyone can see any way to make this faster?

I tried changing ForEach-Object with ForEach-ObjectFast but it's causing the script to take sufficiently longer. also tried changing the first ForEach-Object to a forloop but still took ~29 mins.

  • You could use the .Foreach({}) operator instead. Also, what are you looking to do with your code? You may be able to use Select-String instead Apr 28, 2022 at 13:33
  • It's meant to scan the logfile and when it finds a line with specific values, update the values to real meanings, and outputs the to a new file with an append name like _new. It's essentially deobfuscating a log file.

  • Increasing cyclomatic complexity is a fast track to performance issues. Can you extract the obfuscated string with a regex or substring?

Since you say your input file could be 800MB in size, reading and updating the entire content in memory could potentially not fit. The way to go then is to use a fast line-by-line method and the fastest I know of is switch

  • OK this was way faster. it took my run from 29 mins to 16 sec... one issue I see tho it does not take into account two entries on the same like. in this case, it updates the first part but not the second. seems like its not evaluating multiple entries from lookupTable on the same line
