I am trying to generate a call graph of called functions starting from an (ARM)ELF file. Currently I call objdump, parse the output for call instructions, and recursively repeat.

However, I noticed a function got outputted twice: in my final disassembly (which I keep track of for debugging purposes) I see

As you see, objdump thinks the function __aeabi_dsub doesn't end when __adddf3 starts, and (erroneously) includes the latter in the disassembly. Basically, I end up with __adddf3 included twice.

  1. Why does objdump does this?
  2. How can I make it stop at function label boundaries? The documentation isn't very clear.


EDIT: What I mean is that I'd like objdump to stop at the next label, which should be default behavior, according to Michael Kerrisk's man page:

           Display the assembler mnemonics for the machine instructions
           from the input file.  This option only disassembles those
           sections which are expected to contain instructions.  If the
           optional symbol argument is given, then display the assembler
           mnemonics starting at symbol.  If symbol is a function name
           then disassembly will stop at the end of the function,
           otherwise it will stop when the next symbol is encountered.
           If there are no matches for symbol then nothing will be

Regardless of whether the label correspond to actual functions or not, for the purpose of the analysis I'm doing I'm interested in tracing the call relationship of these pieces of code, assuming they behave as functions.

where the first instructions are listed with a negative offset from the symbol(?)

Note on solution: artless noise's solution provides the context about why this is probably the expected behaviour. What I need to do here is not best practice, so I guess I'd need some convoluted usage of strip and objdump to make it work. Beside their answer, I managed to get what I need by dumping all the disassembly with objdump -j .text -D <file> and writing a program that manually follows the calls

  • are you assuming that machine code/assembly language has the notion of a function and a function boundary as in a high level language? and that all function calls are made with (or returned from) a call and return instruction (bl and bx lr)? Neither are the case. No reason to expect to find function boundaries by label. you can find tne entry point and then follow the code in execution order for all of the return paths, but it is possible, esp if some of this code, like say some floating point libraries, are written in asm, that they can overlap (even compiled code too)

  • a function is a high level language concept and for the most part that concept is lost once you compile. While some/many assembly languages have a procedure or function directive that does not mean that assembly language supports the concept of a function.

  • @old_timer you're right, I used the term "function" due to clarity and conciseness. But Kerrisk's man page for objdump says, about flag --disassemble=symbol: "If symbol is a function name then disassembly will stop at the end of the function, otherwise it will stop when the next symbol is encountered. If there are no matches for symbol then nothing will be displayed." So shouldn't it anyway stop at the next label? Commented Jul 25, 2023 at 16:16

If you step back and think at a higher level,

Replace aeabi_dsub shows that this just the opposite of faddd3.

That is

  1. double faddd3(double a, double b) { return a + b;}
  2. double aeabi_dsub(double a, double b) { return a - b; }

This is another implementation,

double aeabi_dsub(double a, double b) { return faddd3(a,-b); }

So all the aeabi_dsub shim is doing is to flip the sign of 'b' so that the routines are equivalent. What you are asking is that the disassembly of aeabi_dsub would only show,

That is technically correct from your design needs, but if someone wanted to know what the actual routine did, they need to see the body of faddd3 as well. Using objdump --disassemble as a means of seeing what a routine is doing is the primary goal of this flag. You are using it in a way that is abnormal.

The project cally.py will parse objects compiled with -fdump-rtl-expand. You pass all objects and a root function and it generates a graph for you.

A sample *nix command I use is,

  • Thanks! I guess then that the debug symbols stored in the ELF correctly point out the function boundaries, they just don't coincide with the label I see.     Yes, I think an option to 'disassemble' to provide a minimal notation, for example --disassemble-minimal=function is needed to ful-fill your goals. It is just to realize that what you want would be the opposite of most people's needs. Also, there are alternatives like dumping compiler passes to get the type of information you are looking for. So, just to encourage re-thinking the design. It will require understanding compiler pass information... so I empathize with why you want to do it with objdump. Commented Jul 26, 2023 at 14:47
