I am using SQL Server 2019

I have a query that uses a few subqueries with union all and cross apply using string_split on both the sub query and the main query.

The cross apply in the subqueries works fine but the cross apply on the outer query is not working.

I am expecting individual split rows but am still getting rows with semicolons in them.

  • When you use "string_split()" the table of records that results from the split of strings has columns "ordinal" and "value". If you want to include the split values in your final query results, then you need to output the "value" from "string_split()". To be honest, you're making things confusing by aliasing a bunch of different things all with "LOCATOR" .... let's say you changed CROSS APPLY STRING_SPLIT(c.LOCATOR, ';') as LOCATOR to be aliased as LOCATOR2 instead, then in your main SELECT (at the top of your query) you can include LOCATOR2.[value], and that will output the split values

    @Craig STRING_SPLIT() only has ordinal unless you are on 2022 or Azure SQL Database / MI and you include the optional 3rd argument. Commented Aug 29, 2023 at 2:06
  • @Stuckat1337 - that's true, you are correct. As with many things SQL Server, versions and database compatibility levels come into play in terms of what is actually available to be used, and then what the corresponding behaviour will be ....

Try modifying your query in the following way (I've chopped out the middle chunk, because it's a very long query, and you really only need to modify the last "string_split()", and then include an additional output column in the main "outer" SELECT statement.

  • This seems to of worked, as the values on locator2 are split properly. If this is the case, can I ignore the original locator column as locator2 will have all of the values from the string split (including the non split strings) ? At a glance it looks to be so, its hard for me to validate as there are 50k+ results Commented Aug 29, 2023 at 2:53
