I am trying to convert a text file to a parquet file without loading it into memory. This fails because I have a tsv file where a comma "," is used as a decimal separator. Is there any way to fix my code without changing the input file?

  • FWIW I think you can convert from text to parquet without loading the whole lot into memory (at once) via open_dataset() |> (other stuff in the middle) |> write_dataset() as Arrow's backpressure control should help, though it's a moot point with this dataset without the decimal_point argument being implemented yet.

  • @thisisnic: this exactly what I am doing. The question is really about getting arrow to understand (exactly with my pipeline) numbers with the comma as a decimal separator. I cross my fingers for the next release (foreseen when?)

  • Sorry, my response was in response to the previous comment rather than your question (I had originally interpreted @r2evans' comment as "loading it all into memory at once" even though that's not what they actually said now I re-read it). Code freeze is 10th October, but it'll be a bit after that as there are multiple other steps. You can always install from the repo once the PR is merged though! arrow.apache.org/docs/dev/r/articles/install_nightly.html

I'm afraid that the decimal_point argument from the C++ CSV ConvertOptions class hasn't yet been exposed in the R bindings, which is causing complications here. I've opened a ticket and started a PR to implement this, which has a decent chance of being merged before the next release.
