I'm trying to display the console output (cout) of a method in a dll to a textbox in C# program. Every time I call the method, the console output will be displayed in the Output Pane of Visual Studio. Is there a way to redirect the content of the Output Pane to the textbox?

The dll was written by someone else in C++ and I have no control in changing it. The dll is wrapped using SWIG so that it can be called by my C# code.

After following the link suggested by David, I decided to write a solution to your problem which is more specific to your case. This version allows you to receive the stdout in your GUI via a BackgroundWorker PropertyChangedEventHandler call back.

Here's the code for the ConsoleRedirector:

  • I've been using this brilliant code in my app, worked great in Windows 7! When I upgraded to Windows 10 this no longer works. Do you have any idea what about Windows 10 might have broken the above code?

  • First, I would do a debug build of your app and check that the debug.assert statements pass. Then I would step through slowly and see which part appears to not work as intended - is it failing on the _client.read in the background worker's method or is client null or closed coming in? I'm not aware of changes in Windows 10 that would effect this.

  • @Erikest I tested it and when I click "attach" all msgs except output from dll are printed to textbox :( dll print is still in console. Do you also have this problem?
