I have a series of nodes that are direct child nodes to a parent I want to loop over those nodes but have them wrapped in 'groups' of 4... I'm probably not wording this very clearly so this might help;

I have tried variations on this idea - wrapping the lot in the open and closing group tags and every fourth loop drop in a new close / open pair

But essentially it seems XSLT won't let me start with a closing unmatched tag The clkoset solution I ahve found so far is a 'fix' in jquery Wrapping a div around every three divs but I would rather not rely on javascript to format the page.

  • the reason this wasn't working is that you still have to produce at any moment a well-formed document I think. Unless you told the processor that the output is plain text Aug 15 '14 at 16:58

  • Took me a few reads to figure out what you were doing and apply it to my real code. But I got it - I think. Essentially the initial template (match=/.) is used to call the second template (match=span) but in doing so is applied only to every xth counted child (determined as a variable pNumCols). When the second template is called it uses the passed child value and the grabs its siblings and outputs the sibling set - all while wrapping in the required DIV tag.

  • @Elijha: Yes, though the official terminology is slightly different: "applying templates" and "parameter". The essential is getting the nodes into "groups" -- first defining every starting node in a group, then processing the group as a whole. It is possible to do this kind of grouping on arbitrary node-sets -- where the nodes aren't siblings. Mar 28 '12 at 14:31

  • guess you're not using modulo 0 because position() is 1-base indexed? Aug 15 '14 at 17:18
  • instead of span[not(position() > $pNumCols -1)] couldn't one use span[position() <= $pNumCols -1] or even simpler span[position() < $pNumCols] ? Aug 15 '14 at 17:26

If like me you need to transform the source elements that are being divided by position, use xsl:for-each instead of xsl:copy:

       <li><xsl:value-of select="./text()"/></li>
     </xsl:for-each>
   </ol>

  • note that if the position() was a 0-based index instead of 1-based one, we'd be using modulo 0, not modulo 1 Aug 15 '14 at 18:33
  • also note that I use a simpler expression to get the N-1 siblings following every (N*i)+1 item, where i>=0 than used by other post here, but I had to use lt; instead of < because the Altova RaptorXML parser (included in Altova XMLSpy tool) wasn't accepting it Aug 15 '14 at 18:36
