which allows a chain like

matrix(rnorm(16), 4, 4) %>% apply(., 1, sum) %>% sin(.) %>% sum(.)

or

iris %>% 
  subset(., Species == "setosa", select = -Species) %>% 
  colMeans(.)

The . allows for very general use. One would have to expand a little, to e.g. allow for dropping parentheses if nothing is specified on the right, e.g. rnorm(100) %>% mean

One may want to use .. to allow for dots in formulas, e.g.

iris %>% aggregate(. ~ Species, .., mean)
