My dissertation research focused on crop yield modeling methods combining remote sensing (RS), machine learning, and crop simulation models (CSMs). The first component of the dissertation examined variation in soybean yields across single- and double-cropping systems in Brazil. A novel time series dataset of spatially-explicit (500 m) soybean yields was produced from MODIS imagery, field surveys, environmental datasets, and custom ag. land cover classifications. The second component investigated corn and soy yield model performance at high spatial resolutions (~5m) for sites in Nebraska, using approaches which synthesize RS imagery and CSMs. Finally, I tested the yield prediction performance of several machine learning methods in the context of the aforementioned hybrid RS/CSM model. Crop simulation work was conducted with a custom built Python wrapper for the DSSAT crop system modeling suite.
