The SANDRA concept consists of the integration of complex and disparate communication media into a lean and coherent architecture that:

  • provides and manages seamless service coverage across all airspace domains and all aircraft classes
  • sustains growth in the service market and enables easy plug – in of future radio technologies through modularity and reconfigurability
  • is upgradeable, easy reconfigurable and radio technology independent
  • is distributed and instantiated into consistent ground – based and airborne sub – networks ensuring full interoperability.

Focuses on the wimax technology and lead the internal development team that project, developed and tested the wimax integration into the IMR platform of the project. Specifically the component was able to admit, establish and manage new request for connection made by the aircraft during the parking phase where the wimax technology was estabished to be used in the project goals.

The Internet of Things is rapidly diffusing, though severe modifications are needed to the current Internet architecture to cope with its new requirements. A major step forward is decoupling the name of an object (identifier) from its physical location (locator), which are both expressed by the IP address currently. We argue that additional advantages can be brought if context metadata are provided along with the locator, thus forming an enriched locator. In this work, we propose an efficient architecture that allows the enriched locators to be distributed efficiently and in a scalable manner. The distribution protocol exploits the multiple Distributed Hash Table concept, which is well established in peer-to-peer overlays. Preliminary evaluation results obtained with a practical testbed implemented are reported.

The current trend for wireless tactical networks is to employ ad hoc approaches, in which a network infrastructure is not needed and nodes are self-organized, for improved reliability and reduced setup time. However, this creates the need for new or modified protocols from the medium access control (MAC)layer and above. In this paper we propose a transport-layer service for data distribution, suitable for mobile and delay-tolerant networks. Our solution is based on a pure peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay, in which we embedded two features which are important for practical applications: i) reliability, i.e., multiple copies of the same content are disseminated to make the data available even when some nodes are temporarily unreachable; ii) support to geo-localized searches, i.e., nodes can request data relevant to a given geographical area efficiently and without relying on an external/centralized server. The proposed solution is shown to be effective through numerical simulations.

In the next years, the inclusion of a very high number of physical objects with an impending need of interconnection with machine-to- machine (M2M) communication is foreseen. Many applications are cur- rently envisaged for M2M, including smart grid, eHealth/personalised health services, intelligent transportation systems, remote control of industrial processes, social networking. Most of them rely on sen- sors/actuators being connected wireless to a concentrator (or gate- way), which is connected to the Internet. Due to its range, power, and transceiver complexity characteristics, ZigBee is the de facto standard for these so-called capillary networks. However, the current Internet protocols are not very well suited to both the ZigBee technology (e.g., small packets) and many devices using it (e.g., persistent TCP connec- tions). Therefore, there are ongoing e?orts, e.g., in the IPSO Alliance and IETF, to modify existing Internet protocols and creating new ones to cope with such di?culties. We propose a complementary approach, where all the burden of communication is shifted into the Internet- connected gateway, which acts on behalf of the ZigBee ?thing? itself, thus hiding its limited capabilities. This allows us to de?ne in practical manner a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in which the ZigBee de- vices unknowingly play the role of service providers, and their features are exploited through cross-layering techniques between the gateways and devices. For example, mobility would not be handled through the Internet-classical Mobile IP protocol, but rather the gateways use the ZigBee network association and maintenance protocols for detecting roaming, which is handled seamlessly through the SOA. Furthermore, for maximum scalability and e?ciency, we propose to employ a dis- tributed communication overlay among the gateways, based on multi- ple Distributed Hash Table (DHT) routing, which is a well established technique in peer-to-peer architectures.
