I have covered the full breadth of software engineering: from requirements analysis over design and implementation to maintenance of existing software. This paper introduces an experimental platform (SYSLAB) for the research on advanced control and power system communication in distributed power systems and one of its components-an intelligent office building (PowerFlexHouse), which is used to investigate the technical potential for active load management. It also presents in detail how to implement a thermal model predictive controller (MPC) for the heaters' power consumption prediction in the PowerFlexHouse. It demonstrates that this MPC strategy can realize load shifting, and using good predictions in MPC-based control, a better matching of demand and supply can be achieved. With this demand side control study, it is expected that MPC strategy for active load management can dramatically raise energy efficiency and improve grid reliability, when there is a high penetration of intermittent energy resources in the power system.

Reliable, real-time and low-cost communication to a large number of DER units is required for controlling these resources, but difficult to achieve. This paper presents an alternative to traditional closed-loop control which has the potential to relax the real-time requirements on the communication link between supervisory controller and DER unit. Examples are given, and experimental results are provided as a proof-of-concept.

Working on my PhD, title: "Policy-Based Communication for the Control of Power Systems". The basic idea is to use higher-level data formats in control communication, and to especially investigate the idea of policy-based communication that splits control communication into two distinct parts: agreeing on a behaviour to execute, and then executing this behaviour by responding to trigger signals.

I also contributed significantly to the development of the software that controls the experimental power system SYSLAB.

  • Implementing data collection for the in-car computer in a Toyota Prius that had been converted to a plugin hybrid.
  • Rewriting the software controlling the intelligent office building PowerFlexHouse

I also pushed for using modern software development technology for supporting the development:

  • Changing the version control system to Mercurial
  • Introducing continuous integration
  • Installing a new bug tracker
  • Code review
  • Unit testing
  • Enhance documentation of the system in the wiki
